Happy, Happy Birthday!!

Happy birthday Lincoln! Our baby is turning one tomorrow!! We absolutely love this little guy! He is toddling (sometimes running) all over the place, getting into all sorts of mischief—all the time with a huge smile and giggles for his brother and sisters.

Although my fourth baby, he has brought many new things with him—including a baby who: 1) walked before he was one; 2) Was still in size 3 diapers at age one; 3) doesn’t like milk—what!?; 4) Is extremely picky about baby food; and 5) actually requires baby locks, gates, etc… (my first baby to open my kitchen cabinets)!

He is filled with spirit and spunk and has a temper to make any Burnett proud. He melts his mama’s heart with his blue eyes, and chubby round face and his sweet little dance moves. He is definitely a daddy’s boy—he races through the hall laughing and giggling the minute he hears his daddy’s voice.

We love you bubba! This past year with you in our family are filled with many, many cherished memories and we are so thankful to have you!

New Adventures

I can’t believe my baby is turning one tomorrow! Where did that year go? Although it is sad to me at times to think how fast my kids are growing up, Matt and I are really looking forward to a new phase filled with a little more adventure*. It is hard to be adventurous when it takes you an extra hour to pack up extra outfits, bottles, formula, baby food, diapers, wipes, Pj’s, strollers, pack n plays, etc… We are usually so exhausted from the packing that once we finally get us all in the car, we look for some place where we can nap (usually grandma’s house ).

So, here is to a new year filled with new adventures--formula and bottle free (that is going to save us a bundle—which will now be spent on dance lessons)! And to some more sleep in 2012! We wish everyone a wonderful new year, filled with family, friends and Joy!

* I know, I know, I am not one who likes adventure, but I am hoping that my kids and husband can find it in me somewhere—and when I say adventure, I mean the tame rides at Disneyland .

The month of December was a crazy busy one for the Sage Family (which is why there have been no updates to this blog for over a month!). Since I put this blog into a book every year for our family history, I need to get caught up so I can put it together before June rolls around (which is when I got last years done). So, as soon as Matt has a second to update our pictures, I will be overloading this blog (sorry to my three readers) with entries for December. We had a wonderful Christmas Season filled with friends and family and feel very, very blessed….so, stay turned!

Doheny Camping

In September (I am really far behind) we went camping with some good friends. It was a fun time! We spent the whole day on the beach while our kids played together. It was a crazy trip—when we drove down there the power was out in all of south Orange County and San Diego—crazy time getting there! On Saturday there was a huge hail storm! Here are some pics:

Bubba (Lincoln) took his first 3 steps, without help, yesterday. Sunday, November 20th. He walked from me to Madie. He is 10 months—my earliest walker! I can’t believe my baby is growing up so fast—

Big Shoes to Fill…

When Jackson started walking at 1 year, we bought him a pair of shoes. They were size 6 double extra wide! They were ugly then, and still ugly now, but the only shoes wide enough. Crazy! I saved them for Lincoln—however, they are two sizes too big. Lincoln will now be getting walking shoes for Christmas. Size 4 1/2 wide (hopefully they will be wide enough). It is insane to me how chubby and long my babies feet always are! I guess if you are going to be 7 foot tall (that is what doctors and their crazy formulas are saying!) your feet have to be large (and when you have a dad that wears size 14, there is no getting away from it). Jackson is now 7 years old, comes to my shoulder (I am 5’6”) and wears size 4 shoe. It is a full time job to keep my kids in clothes that fit them!

The Angrier Bird

So, for our 9 year Anniversary, I gave Matt a stuffed Angry bird. For many reasons, really, but we won’t get into any of that (I know, cheap anniversary gift—but another long story…).

Anyways…if I thought that bird was angry before, imagine how it must have felt when I found him drowning in the toilet, being scrubbed with soap, by our third child. When I caught her (she was also sopping wet with toilet water), she handed me that soaking wet angrier bird and said…All Clean! All of this five minutes after she pulled down my curtains…rod and all…

Disneyland

So we have been saving for three years to take our kids back to Disneyland. The last time we went, Ray was a baby. So, yesterday we finally found a day to go buy our passes and take the kids for 1/2 a day. It was a perfect day—not too hot or cold and every ride was only a 15 minute wait. Madie’s face was lit up the entire time. We went on Snow White, the Carousel, Haunted Mansion (we had three kids crying at once there—not our best idea), Thunder Mountain (Jackson, Ray, and me), and Buzz Light Year twice (bubbas favorite—he loved the gun). Matt and I were exhausted at the end of it (we were all in bed by 8:45)—but it was so worth it to spend the evening together at the happiest place on earth . Pictures to follow…

Baby Birds

So everyone has the picture of the mama bird coming back with the worm to her nest and all the little baby birds sitting there with wide mouths going crazy to eat. Almost every single time I sit down to eat something, I am immediately surrounded by at least two children, if not four. It is so funny! It doesn’t matter that they were given the same thing 10 minutes ago, by me, and they didn’t eat it. It also doesn’t matter what it is—I could be gnawing on a huge piece of raw broccolli and they would all surround me and beg for some. Crazy, huh, although I haven’t had my full meal in 6 years, I don’t really mind--I love that my kids surround me and that I can finally get them to eat something—.

Our sweet little ray-ray had her birthday on Wednesday! She is five years old!! It has been a week’s worth of celebrations! She started out by spending friday night with her grandparents. They went to color me mine and she made a beautiful princess crown bank. She also got to go out to dinner and did a ton of other things were her grandma and grandpa sage. On Tuesday she got to see Spy Kids 4 and have dinner with her Grandma Burnett (she loves spy kids!). On Wed at school she got to be the Star of the Day! She has been waiting for two months and comes home every day, disappointed that it wasn’t her. She had a doughnut in her backpack for snack and she passed out treat bags to all her school friends.

She has been telling us for months that all she wanted to do was go to Downtown Disney and get a lollipop—so last minute we were able to take her there. We had so much fun!! We went to the rainforest café for dinner (a small fortune and almost as much as throwing a birthday party for her, but well worth their excited faces!). She had fairy dust sprinkled in her hair and then got her lollipop. She danced around that place with her lollipop, badge announcing her birthday, fairy dust, and a smile on her face so big that everyone kept asking her how old she was turning. We hope you had a wonderful birthday ray and we sure love your fiery spirit and creative take on life!

Grateful

The other day my kids and I had a discussion on being grateful for the things Heavenly Father has given us. We talked about how there are many children that don’t have toys or food or a house to live in. They seemed really upset by the idea that there were children out there that didn’t have any toys (I guess food and housing is not as big of a deal to a 5 yr old and 7 yr old). I used this to get them to pack up the toys they don’t use to give to little boys and girls out there who need toys (D.I. here we come). Reagan was the most excited and brought me some of her best toys.

Then, in Jackson’s prayer last night he started praying for “all the kids that don’t have toys or food that someone rich would come and give it to them.” Love the humble, sincere prayers of a little child.

I love it when an important life lesson actually sticks to my kids’ brains longer than one day…

and I am grateful to a father in heaven who loaned me these four sweet little souls to humble me and to teach me about what it really means to be grateful…

Three More Years…

Conversation last night with Jackson at bedtime:

Jackson: “Mom, you don’t need to tuck me into bed at night any more. I am seven and should be able to tuck myself in” (he said this all very sweetly, so as not to hurt my feelings).

Mom: “How about I tuck you in for just awhile longer.”

Jackson: “Three weeks?”

Mom: “How about three years.”

Jackson: “Ok. When I am ten you can stop, that should be good.”

This conversation made me sad to think how fast my little boy is growing up. Next year he will be baptized. It also made me think on how I need to cherish these little moments, for they only last so long, but luckily I have three more years ….

We had a girls day out on Labor Day, so the boys could play computer. I took the girls to get their first manicures. Ray chose bright green with flowers (her new favorite color) and Madie chose purple with flowers. I wasn’t sure how Madie would do, since she can hardly sit still and she is only two, but she loved it and did everything they told her to do (how did they do that!). We also got chocolate milk shakes—in total I think we were gone 45 minutes, but I loved being with my girls! Here are some pictures:

First Day of School

On August 15th, 2011, Jackson started 2nd grade and Ray started kinder! Wow, how the time is just flying by! I got to spend the first day of kindergarten with Reagan—they had a little scavenger hunt and we scoped out the kinder scene together—she was so excited they had swings and she had so much fun wearing her new twinkle toe shoes and having a snack at her new school.

Jackson is a pro and barely gave me a hug as he ran to see all his friends. So excited for them, but sad that summer had to end so quickly—will miss them here during the day!

75 percentile!!

So we finally have a baby that is on the charts! Lincoln is 8 months, 29 inches and 21 pounds! Wow—that puts him at the 96 percentile for height and 75 percentile for weight. Is this my baby? At 8 months Jackson weighed 33lbs and was almost tall enough to ride the Matterhorn at Disneyland (not quite, but you see what I am getting at…).

He is also our first baby to crawl…he started moving at 7 months…

My little four year old’s soccer team is the Vegas Flamingoes? Really?? Don’t get me wrong, I love Vegas because my dear brother, sis-in-law and new little nephew live there, but… I want to see my little girl in a pink or purple little soccer get-up with bows in her hair, not the “Fabulous Las Vegas” sign flashing as she races across the soccer field (I know, my kids don’t race, they mosey—but, you get my drift).

Honestly, what is the first thing you think of when you see the “Fabulous Las Vegas” sign?—probably not a little girl’s soccer team. I am just saying….

Orange County Fair

We have this tradition of going to the OC Fair with grandma, grandpa (and this year Weeze and Aaron). Ray had her face painted, they went on rides, had shaved ice, went to an insect exhibit, and went to the petting zoo. Madie absolutely loved the petting zoo and I think Jackson and Ray’s favorite part was the roller coaster. Aunt Weeze even helped me win an “Angry Bird” for Matt for our anniversary (our favorite game these days). Here are some pics:

Swimming with Grandpa

So my phone takes horrible pictures in the bright sunlight, but you can still make out some of these shadows—this is mainly to jog my memory of our summer fun. We went to grandpas swimming one day and grandpa went in the pool! He took the little ones all around the pool, splashed with them, and was basically a human jungle gym for the day. The kids loved it!

For Jackson’s friend birthday party this year he had a few boys over to play Laser Tag and have a BBQ. We went down to the park near our house—it was blistering hot. We would have them play a game and then get a snow cone, play a game and then another snowcone. Daddy got the best prizes ever for the winners—candy with a mini laser—great find! We then came back for hotdogs/hamburgers, chocolate cake and presents. Thank you to the grandmas,grandpas, and aunts/uncles that helped! Sorry about the photo, I took it on my phone.

We did a ton of fun things at Clear Lake this year, now that our kids are starting to get a little older. I must say, too, that having a trailer with a fridge, freezer and air conditioning has made a world of difference in our camping adventures. It is quite the experience to hose off your algae soaked child in a little muddy water spigot, take them into your 110 degree tent to change their dirty diaper on a sleeping bag and then strap them in to a camp chair to feed them—all the time trying to keep dirt out of their mouths and flies off their face…

Yes, a trailer is quite the blessing and our little piece of heaven…

Anyways, to finish up our trip, here are a few things for us to remember about Clear Lake 2011:

We took the kids to their first rodeo. They were bored to tears and Madie fell “up” the bleachers giving her a huge cut and black eye—but Matt and I really enjoyed the little bits that we saw.
Matt took me on a date to the “Other Side of the Lake”—while we ate our Renee’s shakes. We had so much fun just driving together, talking, and seeing (sort of—it was pitch black) a few sights of the lake.
This was my historic 10 year mark at Clear Lake
We took the kids to see Cars II-
Madie went jetskiing for the first time
Madie tried to jump off the boat (it was going 40 mph at the time)
Madie did jump off the boat to go swimming, didn’t realize she was in the middle of the lake and couldn’t touch the bottom (thank you aunt Laura for saving her)
Grandpa and Grandma Burnett came to visit—we had all sorts of fun with them at the festival, rodeo, etc
Jackson and Ray were Jr. Rangers this year

Clear Lake Adventures

As most of you know who read this blog, we go on a two week vacation every year to Clear Lake, in Northern California. We love camping in our little trailer and this year was filled with many little adventures for our little ones.

The second or third day of vacation, the Sage boat sank (don’t worry, it has since been fixed):

Imagine coming out of your trailer to this in the morning, ouch!

Although a heartbreaking sight, at least it happened at camp and everyone was ok—it was insured. It was quite the sight to see 15 people trying to bail out the boat…

Next we celebrated the Fourth of July—our first ever at Clear Lake. We went to the festival in town and got the kids some shaved ice. We made patriotic head bands for the girls and we came back to a bonfire, smores, and glow bracelets. No fireworks, but the kids didn’t care…they were with their cousins. Here are some pics:

My sweet little boy turns 7 tomorrow! Wow! We sure love the way he looks at the world so differently and how he finds joy in all the simple things of childhood. He has learned how to swim this summer and loves it—as long as he has his blue goggles. His favorite things to do are play monopoly, chess (especially 4 way with his dad, cousin, and grandpa), swim, of course play the wii and computer (some things never change), and read his Harry Potter books. He is the best big brother to Ray, madie, and lincoln—rarely losing his patience and almost always willing to help me with them.

Today we had an early birthday breakfast of french toast—his favorite. In his prayer he asked that we would travel safe tomorrow to go bowling for his birthday (I guess that is where we will be tomorrow ). He also wanted us to toast to him and his teeth today at breakfast (because its is obviously his teeth's birthday, too).

We just love this little boy and are so grateful to have him in our family. Happy Birthday Jackson!

Bubba Update

Lincoln (bubba) got his first two teeth (bottom) at 4 and 1/2 months. He rolled over at 5 months and said his first word on fathers day—dada. He celebrated his six month birthday in the trailer at Clear Lake—with his whole family singing to him. Six month stats to follow!

Fathers Day

This year we had a father’s day weekend for Matt. We made stir fry (thank you to my friend for a fabulous recipe) on Saturday night and then Sunday morning the kids gave him a picnic brunch (his meetings were canceled!) where they made German Pancakes (thank you, again, to a great friend with an amazing recipe).

Jackson gave him a wallet he had made that had coupons in it. One was to help him bring in the groceries and the other was allowing Matt to be “player 1” when they play the wii (a huge sacrifice for Jackson). Reagan and Madie both gave him paper ties that they had made which he proudly wore to church. (Lincoln and Mom gave him a pair of pants—I know, my kids get their creativity from me ).

Matt, I am so grateful for the amazing dad that you are to our kids. You guide them, protect them, teach them the gospel, tickle and laugh with them constantly and love being their dad. Our kids are happy, confident, intelligent, strong, and love the gospel because of you. Happy Late Father’s Day!

And happy Father’s Day to our two wonderful dads!

The Clear Lake Chain

Our kids begin asking us about April when Clear Lake is coming (actually, they ask us all year, but that is when I finally start paying attention), so, in order to get them even more excited (as if that were possible) we make a clear lake count down chain.

We have six days left on our chain…so it is time to start packing!

Our Madie

Madie is our middle child. She is spicy, bold, extremely loud, curious, loving, and very protective of her things (which includes her baby brother). She is definitely an explorer and is very curious as to how things work, some of her explorations include, but are definitely not limited to:

1) Putting nail polish all over her face and eyes

2) Stamping her entire arm and leg with Hello Kitties

3) With her partner in crime, Bristol, climbing into the baby pool with all of her clothes on

4) Coloring all our walls on numerous occasions (we have had to repaint at least twice)

5) Once again stamping the entire back seat of my car green (and yes, I have finally learned to put the stamps up)

6) the list goes on…

She will not let anyone near her little brother, she loves to read books, she absolutely loves the water—she will spend hours in it, she is super strong, is very quick to say she is sorry and that she loves you and every afternoon when I tuck her in for a nap she blows me a kiss.

We love our little Madie—so full of spunk, has quite the sense of humor and, and even though we rarely understand a word that she says, is quite the life and spirit of our little Sage Family.

I put my girls hair in sponge curlers the other day. They slept in the over night and I was absolutely amazed when Madie woke up with all of them in except one. Madie’s actually stayed curled, rays fell out—her hair is so heavy. Anyways, here is a cute picture of them:

Jackson the other day told us that his name is a compound word: Jack and Son. He said that Reagan’s was a compound word: Ray and Gun. And our favorite, Matthew is a compound word: Math and eewww. Classic Jackson.

Madie at 2 years and 2 months weighs 34 pds and is 36 inches tall. Not on any of the charts—not surprising, have you seen the size of her feet? They are nearly as big as Reagan’s (who is 2 1/2 years older).

Lincoln is 4 months. He weighs 16 and a half pounds and is 27 inches long. He is in the 97 percentile for height and only the 75 percentile for weight—huh? All Sage babies, thus far, have always been “off the charts” and when I asked the Dr. if I needed to feed him more because he was so small, she just looked at me. It looks like we may be beginning a new era…

The Perfect Storm

Jackson has turned out to be quite the reader—we weren’t sure, at first, he didn’t seem too interested. In order to get him reading, we had to create our own little “Perfect Storm”—Where, a reader (old palm pilot), a special bedtime (1/2 hour past his bedtime), and Harry Potter all collided to spark the interest of a little boy. He has finished all of the Roald Dahl books (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, BFG, etc) and is now on chapter ten of Harry Potter. Way to go Jackson (coming from a proud mama)! If anyone has some great book suggestions for a youth reader—please let me know! We are always on the look out.

Matts Birthday

For Matts birthday this year he got a tie, hat, and shirt—all things he needs—such a practical guy (or maybe his wife, who picked them all out, is the practical one ).

Lincoln turned 4 months on May 12th. He is so adorable! I haven’t taken him in for his shots yet (so I don’t know his stats), but he is now giggling, trying to roll over, has this adorable belly laugh, and his two bottom teeth are trying to peek through. For some reason, we didn’t get any pictures of the easter egg hunts our kids did this year (it might have something to do with we are outnumbered 4 to 2—and really, Lincoln counts for two since he is a newborn—so 5 to 2 ). So, here are just a couple of pictures of our kids dying eggs:

On conference weekend, Matt’s mom, dad, brothers and sisters had a birthday dinner for Madie.

She got a stroller and carrier for her dolls and two beautiful dresses.

Her Aunt Sharon made her a beautiful pink flower cake and she loved having everyone sing to her.

I can’t believe how fast she is growing up! She looks like such a little lady in these pictures! We love u little Madie!

April Fools

Jackson has a mind that works a little bit differently than many…
He is getting ready to read the Harry Potter books in first grade, he is amazing at math, yet, he needed to have a note pinned to him at the beginning of the school year telling his teacher that his lunch was in his backpack—so when he told her that he had forgot it, she would look in his bag
He is just a very literal, deep thinker and can not have his mind cluttered with menial details (he is his daddy’s boy).
So, his mind also works in a very different way when it comes to jokes--We asked Jackson if he played any April Fools tricks on his friends at school. He said, I tried, but no one would believe me. Then he said, I was the only person who’s jokes they wouldn’t fall for and they all kept tricking me…
He is so cute, I love how his brain works just a bit differently…it makes him unique, although susceptible to those tricksters on April Fools.

Happy Late Birthday Madie!

Madie turned 2 on March 7, 2011. We took her to build-a-bear, as is our 2 year birthday family tradition. She wasn’t very interested, so mom got to build it for her (I had a ton of fun!). On her actual bday we stopped in Vegas on our way home from Utah and had cupcakes with Uncle Buck, Aunt Elise, Grandma and Grandpa. We love you Madie—thanks for filling our days with giggles, mischief, and tons of love!

Irvine Park

Nationals

Baseball season is here again! Jackson is on the Nationals. When he is not chasing butterflies, playing in the dirt, or blowing dandelions, he is a great little player . He loves to play catcher and he can hit the ball without the tee. He sure looks handsome in his uniform!

At two months at 1 week Lincoln weighed almost 13lbs (I can’t remember his height—too many things to remember these days—but I can guarantee that he is not on the charts).

Gone Camping

We have a tradition (since last year ) to go beach camping with good friends from our old ward during Easter Break. This year it poured rain. On our way down there, the wind and rain was so bad that we couldn’t even see the road and our trailer and truck kept weaving all over the place—scared me to death! But, it only rained Sunday night and Monday morning and the rest of the time the kids had a blast.

Madie loved this puddle! At one point she was laying down on her belly, swimming through it (and it was freezing cold!). I had to draw the line when she tried to drink it…

To all who know Ray, she loves to spend hours telling stories and she has to always have a wand, straw, stick, in her hand to help her concentrate—

Lincoln was blessed by Matt on February 6, 2011. He screamed all the way up to the minute of the blessing and when I walked him up to the front and handed him to his daddy, he immediately stopped and was quiet until Matt handed him back to me—such a daddy’s boy! We went home from the hospital on January 13th, 2011. The pediatrician let us go early since babies born to moms with strep B usually are required to stay in the hospital for 48 hours for observation. We just couldn’t take the hospital food anymore !

Lincoln’s Birth

Lincoln William Sage was born January 12, 2011 (he didn’t quite make 1-11-11—although about 30 other babies in the hospital that day did). He was 7lbs 11 oz (our smallest baby yet) and 20.5 inches (just like Jackson and Madie). He was born at 7am (a very long night). He was actually born on his due date. He looks just like Jackson—including the blonde hair and blue eyes that neither of our girls had. I remember when we went in that night around 9pm—all the nurses were fighting over who would be assigned to me—since he was a fourth baby and they tend to be quick. However, I was in labor for 10 hours—double that of Madie’s labor.

Here we are Christmas Morning: Jackson got a WII game (the usual), Ray got a mass of Pet shops, and Madie got a little princess keyboard.
